If you’re a Brea home owner, you may have seen Jim Rome recently. He visited Reuben’s in Brea and the Rose and Crown pub in Anaheim to build a rapport with fans, and get people excited about his new Showtime program. Rome has long been a mainstay on Southern California radio, but now, he’s taking his show to TV.
This week, he announced the second of three series that came with his move to CBS earlier this year. The show, called “Jim Rome on Showtime,” will feature guests like Kobe Bryant, Aaron Rodgers, and Peter Gruber, co-owner of the Golden State Warriors. Rome also has a daily TV show on CBS SPorts Network, and he’s launching a new CBS radio show in January.
In talking about his career and the way things are unfolding, Rome adds, “I always thought if I came at it pretty hard, maybe there was a place for me in the business. Maybe I could make a living. But I have far exceeded any plan I had for myself.” Rome is known for addressing both fans and guests like they’re knowledgeable sports fans, a trait that endears him to people and makes it appear like it’s a conversation between old friends.
Rome’s television show on ESPN called “Rome is Burning” was a huge success, and perhaps the pinnacle of his career. Some wonder why he left such a great spot. He adds, “My feeling with ESPN was I was getting comfortable, and I felt the bigger risk would be in not taking a risk. I needed a new challenge. I needed to get out of my comfort zone, to reach. And I felt at that point in my career, if I don’t do it now, I’m never going to do it.”
